Why Is Ganpati Visarjan Performed?
Tradition holds that when Bappa arrives on Ganesh Chaturthi, happiness and prosperity enter the home with him — and during visarjan, sorrow and difficulties are symbolically immersed along with the idol.
The ten-day custom traces back to a well-known katha involving Maharishi Ved Vyas and the writing of the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha took on the task of writing it, using his own broken tusk as a pen and continuing without pause for ten days. By the end, his body had grown hot from the effort, so Ved Vyas cooled him by bathing him in a nearby lake on Anant Chaturdashi — the origin of keeping Ganpati for ten days before immersion.
When to Perform Visarjan If Not on the 10th Day
Keeping Ganpati for the full ten days with every ritual observed isn't always practical, so the scriptures allow visarjan after one and a half, three, five, or seven days as well.
One and a half days (15 Sept): Shubh window 3:21 PM–4:54 PM. Third day (16 Sept): Shubh window 10:43 AM–12:16 PM. Fifth day (18 Sept): Char/Labh/Amrit window 6:07 AM–10:43 AM. Seventh day (20 Sept): Char/Labh/Amrit window 7:40 AM–12:14 PM. Confirm the exact Kolkata timing with your local Panchang, since Choghadiya shifts a little by city.

Ganesh Visarjan: Puja Vidhi
Visarjan deserves the same care as the sthapana — follow these steps in order.
Perform the uttar puja
Offer flowers, rice grains, durva, bhog, kumkum, turmeric and naivedya to Ganpati one last time.
Do the family aarti
Gather the whole family for a final aarti before the idol leaves the home.
Pray for his return
Ask Ganpati to return again next year, and lift the idol with respect.
Immerse at a water source
A river, pond or the sea is preferred. If immersing at home, a large tub or bucket can be used instead — never leave the idol unattended by the water's edge.
