When Is Kali Puja 2026?

Kali Puja is performed on Kartik Amavasya, on the night when the new-moon tithi covers midnight. In 2026 the Amavasya tithi runs from 11:27 AM on Sunday, 8 November to 12:31 PM on Monday, 9 November (IST), so Bengal worships Maa Kali on the night of 8 November — the same evening the rest of India performs Lakshmi Puja for Diwali.

The main worship happens in Nishita kaal, the roughly 50-minute window around local midnight. Panchang sources list it as 11:39 PM to 12:31 AM for New Delhi; in Kolkata it comes a little earlier because the city sits further east. Follow the exact minutes in your family panjika (Gupta Press or Bisuddha Siddhanta) or the time your purohit gives.

Quick answer: Kali Puja 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The puja is performed at night in Nishita kaal, close to midnight, while Amavasya tithi is running.

The Four Days Around Kali Puja

Dhanteras · Fri, 6 Nov

Families buy new metal utensils, a new broom or gold, and light a lamp for Yama at the door in the evening.

Bhoot Chaturdashi · Sat, 7 Nov

Fourteen leafy greens (choddo shaak) at lunch and fourteen lamps (choddo prodip) in the dark corners of the house, in memory of fourteen generations of ancestors.

Kali Puja & Dipanwita · Sun, 8 Nov

Maa Kali is worshipped at midnight. Many Bengali homes also perform Dipanwita Lakshmi Puja that evening, bidding Alakshmi farewell before welcoming Lakshmi.

Bhai Phonta · Wed, 11 Nov

On Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, sisters place the phonta of sandalwood on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life.

Kali Puja Samagri List (Bengali Home Puja)

Use this as your phorda. Your purohit may add a few items depending on your family's custom.

  • Pratima or ghot for Maa Kali, with a red cloth (lal shalu) as asan
  • 108 red hibiscus (joba) flowers and a joba garland
  • Bel leaves, durba grass and fresh flowers
  • Ghot (kalash), mango leaves and a green coconut (dab)
  • Sindoor, alta, red chandan and kumkum
  • Atop rice, paddy (dhaan) and black sesame (til)
  • Ghee and mustard-oil pradip, cotton wicks and camphor
  • Dhuno, dhoop and incense sticks
  • Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar
  • Gangajal and a copper kosha-kushi
  • Paan, supari, haritaki and five kinds of fruit
  • Sweets, batasha and naivedya for the offering
  • Conch (shankha) and a brass bell (ghanta)
  • Kusha grass, a new gamchha and a small mirror
  • Havan samagri and samidha, if hom is part of your vidhi
  • Bhog as per family custom — khichuri, labra, payesh or your traditional bhog

Short on time? Amodr's puja samagri is dispatched from Kolkata in 24–48 hours. Order early — Kali Puja week is the busiest of the year.

Kali Puja Vidhi at Home, Step by Step

  1. Purify and set the altar

Clean the puja room, draw an alpana and place the pratima or ghot on a red cloth, facing east or north.

  2. Sankalpa and ghot sthapana

The purohit takes the sankalpa in your family's name and gotra, then installs the ghot with mango leaves and dab.

  3. Ganesh and Panchadevata puja

Ganesh, Surya, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga are worshipped first so the main puja begins without obstacles.

  4. Dhyan and avahan of Maa Kali

In Nishita kaal the purohit recites the dhyan mantra and invokes the Mother into the pratima or ghot.

  5. Shodashopachar puja and 108 joba

Sixteen offerings — water, sindoor, lamp, incense, garland, naivedya and more — followed by 108 hibiscus flowers offered one by one.

  6. Bhog, hom, aarati and pushpanjali

Bhog is offered, hom is performed where it is part of the family vidhi, and the night closes with aarati and pushpanjali for the whole family.

Some Kali Puja rites follow the Bengali tantric tradition and should only be performed by a purohit trained in that vidhi. That is exactly how Amodr assigns purohits for Amavasya night.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Kali Puja in 2026?

Sunday, 8 November 2026. Amavasya tithi runs from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November (IST), and the puja is performed that night in Nishita kaal.

Is Kali Puja on the same day as Diwali in 2026?

Yes, both fall on 8 November 2026. North and West India perform Lakshmi-Ganesh puja in the evening Pradosh kaal, while Bengal, Assam and Odisha worship Maa Kali around midnight.

What is the Kali Puja time in Kolkata?

Around midnight, in Nishita kaal. Delhi's window is listed as 11:39 PM to 12:31 AM; Kolkata's comes slightly earlier, so confirm the exact minutes in your panjika or with your purohit.

Can I do Kali Puja at home without a purohit?

A simple worship with a lamp, joba flowers, bhog and prayer is something any devotee can offer. The full vidhi with sankalpa, avahan and hom is best done by a trained purohit.

When is Bhoot Chaturdashi 2026?
