Bhai Phonta falls on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, three days after Kali Puja. In 2026 the Dwitiya tithi begins at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, 10 November and ends at 3:53 PM on Wednesday, 11 November (IST). Because Dwitiya is present at sunrise on the 11th, Bengal celebrates Bhai Phonta on Wednesday, 11 November 2026.
Most families give the phonta in the morning, after the sister's bath and before she breaks her fast. Aim to finish before Dwitiya ends in the afternoon; if your family panjika gives a different time, follow it.
Quick answer: Bhai Phonta 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November. Give the phonta in the morning, ideally before Dwitiya tithi ends at 3:53 PM.
The Story Behind Bhai Phonta
The day is also called Yama Dwitiya. Yamuna had invited her brother Yama, the lord of death, many times. When he finally visited on this Dwitiya, she welcomed him with a tilak, a lamp and a feast. Pleased, Yama declared that any brother who receives his sister's tilak on this day would be protected from untimely death.
That promise is why the phonta is more than a mark of love. It is a sister's prayer that her brother's path stays safe — and the reason many sisters fast until the phonta is given.
The Phonta Rhyme and What It Means
As she places the phonta, the sister recites a rhyme handed down through generations:
ভাইয়ের কপালে দিলাম ফোঁটা, যমের দুয়ারে পড়ুক কাঁটা। যমুনা দেয় যমকে ফোঁটা, আমি দিই আমার ভাইকে ফোঁটা॥
Bhaiyer kopale dilam phonta, Jomer duare poruk kanta. Jomuna dey Jomke phonta, ami dii amar bhaike phonta.
It means: "I place the phonta on my brother's forehead — may thorns bar the door of Yama. As Yamuna gives the phonta to Yama, I give the phonta to my brother." Families add their own lines, but this core verse is sung in almost every Bengali home.
How Bhai Phonta Is Done, Step by Step
The sister's fast
The sister bathes early and stays without food until she has given the phonta.
Seat the brother
The brother sits on an asan facing east. The thali, a lit pradip and a conch are kept ready beside him.
Three phontas with the rhyme
With the little finger of her left hand, the sister touches chandan to his forehead three times while reciting the rhyme. Some families also use doi and kajal from a ghee lamp.
Dhaan-durba blessing
She places paddy and durba grass on his head for a long life, while the conch is blown and the women give ulu.
Pronam and gifts
The younger sibling touches the elder's feet, and the brother gives his sister a gift.
The feast
Sweets come first, then the Bhai Phonta lunch the family has been planning all week.
Bhai Phonta Thali Checklist
- Chandan (sandalwood paste) in a small bowl
- Kajal from a ghee lamp, and doi if your family uses it

- A lit ghee pradip
- Conch (shankha) for the shankha-dhwani
- Sweets — sandesh, rosogolla or your brother's favourite
- Paan and supari

Gift Ideas That Carry a Blessing
Sweets are finished by evening; a blessing can stay for years. If you want a gift with meaning, choose something your brother can wear or keep in his puja space — a rudraksha, a sacred thread from a temple, or a samagri kit for his new home.
Amodr Store's Dhan Yog Set pairs a lab-certified Nepali 7 Mukhi Rudraksha with a six-stone bracelet in a keepsake box for ₹1,001 — ₹999 for the set, ₹1 to Anna Daan and ₹1 as pandit dakshina.
Rudraksha and stones are part of spiritual practice. They are not a substitute for financial, medical or professional advice.
